The process of packing for a move can be quite daunting when you look at everything that needs to be put in boxes. However, some things need more care than others because they are fragile. Here are some tips for packing those more delicate items so they arrive in one piece.
Pick The Right Box
Moving boxes are not always a one-size-fits-all solution when packing. There are special boxes that are going to be needed to protect certain items. Dishware, glassware, artwork, mirrors, and TVs all have specialty boxes that can give items added protection. Consider picking the right box for the job when one exists for it.
Assemble The Box Correctly
It's important that you assemble your box correctly by giving it enough support on the bottom. You do not want to end up in a situation where the bottom of the box breaks open and your items fall to the ground. Use strips of packing tape across the seam of the box so that it will not open on its own.
Prepare The Box
If you need to use a regular box for your fragile items, prepare it by lining the box with soft packing material. This includes crumpled packing paper, bubble wrap, and cardboard dividers so that items do not directly touch. You may need a box larger than initially thought to compensate for the packing material you will use.
Wrap The Items
Each item should be wrapped individually, rather than let it potentially move around freely in a box. A thin layer of bubble wrap can add some much-needed protection in case the items shift around in the box. Sometimes items can benefit from tissue paper if you're trying to prevent the surface from being scratched.
Pack The Box
Additional packing material can be placed in the box to prevent the delicate item from moving around. Fill in the gaps so that the item will not move around in transit. Don't pack a box with too many delicate items if it will make the box tight and put pressure on the items you do not want to break accidentally.
Label The Box
Make sure that all boxes with fragile items are clearly marked. This will prevent people from being rough with them during the move, and can even keep them upright and facing the proper direction. Every bit of care helps if you want to ensure a damage-free move.
